Dry Cleaning Step by Step Process Explained

What is Dry Cleaning?

Dry cleaning is a special way to clean clothes without using water. Instead of water, it uses a liquid chemical to remove stains and dirt from the fabric. This method is useful for clothes that can get damaged if washed with water, like delicate fabrics or those with special decorations. After the dry cleaning process, the clothes are dried, pressed, and returned to the customer looking clean and neat.

What do Professional Dry Cleaners do?

‘Dry Cleaning’ although the term specifies ‘Dry’ is technically not Dry. It is, in fact, a specialized process done with a special chemical solvent. Washing clothes at home relies heavily on water, while there are several fabrics and expensive clothing that cannot be washed using water. In addition, some nasty stains need tough treatment that can be done carefully using Dry Cleaning methods when employed by expert professionals.

Earlier, the process of Dry Cleaning involved heavy use of Petroleum based solvent PERC which was neither eco-friendly nor people friendly. It posed massive health risks and its use is steadily and gradually being mandated out. When you rely on a Dry Cleaning Service provider committed to Eco Friendly practices, their Eco-friendly practices and solvent stacks ensure neither you nor the planet is harmed.

What are the steps involved in the commercial Dry Cleaning Process?

At Laundry Gopher, we utilize a specific process to ensure superior quality service to our clients. When it comes to dry cleaning your garments, we follow this 8 step process which ensures ‘no stain is left unnoticed.’

Let’s quickly visit each step of understanding what do dry cleaners do:

Tagging your Garments

The first step in this approach is to Tag your Garments. We tag them to ensure that our team has taken a stock of the type of Fabric, Blend and the Instructions, you the client has shared, as well as the Manufacturer may have shared on the label.

This lets our team know the right approach to take when it comes to actually ‘Dry Cleaning’ your garments.

Inspection

Once the team has taken a stock of the type of Fabric, the blend, instructions and other necessities, we move on to inspecting the garment for visible and often unnoticed stains. We then take stock of how strong that stain is and the process necessary to get it off your beautiful fabric without affecting its appearance. At this stage, it is important to determine the nature of the stain – oil based, protein based or something else – it is all in the hands of the cleaner and his expertise that determines the next step.

Pre-Treatment

Now once the nature of the stain on your ‘Dry Cleaning’ clothes is determined, we move on to the Pre-treatment stage. Depending on the nature of the stain, we choose whether a chemical solvent or another spotting agent is used specifically on these stains. Not only are these spotting agents designed to preserve the integrity of your fabric but the people administering them in our team are highly trained and experts in their job.

After the solvent or agent is applied on the stain, it is briefly agitated using hands to ensure the solvent seeps through the fabric and breaks down the stain – chemistry in action!

Machine Dry Cleaning

After the spotting is carefully done, it is time to dip your clothes into a chemical solvent and run them through the machine. The clothes keep rotating in the machine where the cylinder routinely releases the chemical solvent at regular automated intervals. After the rotational cycle is finished, the machine takes it for a spin, quite literally so, getting rid of any excess chemical solvent that might remain. The result is absolutely dry clothing.

Now, you see where we get the name ‘Dry Cleaning’ from.

Post Treatment

If the stains are too nasty, then we repeat the ‘Pre-Treatment’ solvent application process once more, this time only by hand. This becomes a hand dry-cleaning process in special cases.

Ironing

Once the hand drying process is complete, it is time to make your clothes wrinkle-free and crisp – as good as new, maybe even better. They are pressed and ironed to crisp sophistication.

Inspection

Finally, we inspect your garments once again to ensure that ‘no stains’ remain and the clothes are in impeccable condition.
